1. Who we are
ShareARide is a ride-sharing app operating in South Africa that connects riders with independent drivers offering seats on trips they're already taking. This policy explains what information we collect through the ShareARide app, why, and how it's used.
2. Information you provide directly
All users, at registration: name, surname, phone number, email address, and a chosen username.
Drivers, during verification (required before posting trips):
- ID number, and photos of your ID document and a selfie for identity verification
- Driver's license number, expiry date, and photos of the license
- Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) details, if applicable
- Confirmation that you have no pending criminal investigations affecting your eligibility to provide public transport, and consent to a criminal background check
- Vehicle details (make, model, colour, year, licence plate) and photos of the vehicle and its licence disc
- Banking details (bank name, account holder name, account number) — collected to enable driver payouts
All users: messages sent through the in-app chat feature during a trip, ratings and reviews left for other users, and any complaint or emergency alert you file through the app.
3. Information collected automatically
- Location: a driver's live GPS location is broadcast while a trip they're driving is actively underway (from collection through arrival), so riders on that specific trip can track it in real time. A rider's pickup location (address and/or coordinates) is shared with their driver for that trip. If you use the panic/emergency alert feature, your location at that moment is captured and shared with our support team.
- Trip and booking history: routes, dates, prices, seat counts, and booking/payment status.
- Payment status: whether a booking is paid and by which method (cash or card). Full card details are never stored by ShareARide or seen by our servers — card payments are processed entirely by our third-party payment gateway (currently PayFast), who has their own privacy policy governing that data.
- Device/push token: used solely to deliver push notifications to your device (e.g. booking updates, trip status changes).
4. How we use this information
- To operate core features: matching riders with drivers, managing bookings and payments, and live trip tracking.
- To verify driver eligibility and keep the platform safe for all users.
- To send transactional communications: booking confirmations, trip status updates, payment receipts, and account-related emails.
- To investigate complaints, disputes, and emergency alerts.
- To calculate and pay out driver earnings.
5. Who your information is shared with
- Other trip participants: once a booking is confirmed, the driver and rider(s) on that trip can see each other's name, phone number, and (for the duration of the trip) live location, so the ride can actually happen and either party can be contacted if needed.
- Payment processors: card payment details are handled directly by our payment gateway (PayFast), not by ShareARide.
- Emergency/support response: if you trigger the in-app panic/emergency alert, your identity, trip details, and location are shared with ShareARide's support team, who may also encourage contacting local emergency services directly.
- We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
6. Data retention
We retain account, trip, and booking data for as long as your account is active, and for a reasonable period afterward as needed for legal, tax, dispute-resolution, and safety-record purposes (for example, driver verification and criminal-declaration records, and trip history relevant to an unresolved complaint).
7. Your choices
You can update your name, phone number, and profile photo at any time from within the app. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, or to ask a question about this policy, contact us at support@sharearide.co.za.
8. Children
ShareARide is not directed at children. You must be at least 18 years old to register as a driver or rider.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date below.
